15.04.2010, 15:15 Lucid Lynx approaching

In one and a half weeks, Ubuntu will release version 10.04, Lucid Lynx. Since lucid is a long time release (LTR), there are relatively little revolutionary features. However, some of the previous innovations are now matured and ready for the LTR.
For admins of servers, the list of changes, compared to karmic, is rather small, especially if backport-repositories are in use. Some server applications are included in relevant new versions, for example PHP (5.2 -> 5.3, better performance and improved security) or the eBox-Packages (1.3 -> 1.5, much more mature platform).
Desktop-Users will see much more changes. Gnome is shipped in version 2.30, including some usability improvements in Nautilus, new administration features, cleanup to the UI in many applications, and finally some improvements to the library, removing deprecated stuff. A completely new UI-design has been introduced as well, making Gnome look a little bit more state of the art. KDE is shipped in version 4.4, fixing 7293 bugs and introducing all in all 1433 new features, compared to the previous version. Far more Plasma-Widgets are available and the previously existing ones have matured greatly. KDE 4.4 and Gnome 2.30 are from my point of view worthy releases for inclusion in a long time release.
Netbook-Users will be happy to hear, that the recently introduced netbook-remixes are finally somewhat finished. While previous version felt somewhat unfinished, especially kubuntu-netbook looks very promising.
